FTP Settings for Webhawks.org
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is what you use to transfer files between your computer and the Web server. Your own computer is called the "local" computer, and the server is called the "remote" computer. "Uploading" is the trasnfer of files from your computer to the server; "downloading" is the transfer of files from the Web server to your computer.
To be able to upload files from your computer to the Web server, you will need a software program capable of "file transfer protocol" (FTP). There are many such programs, known as "FTP clients." All of the computers in the Cabrillo computer lab (the CTC), as well as the computers in the Digital Media classrooms, have FTP clients installed; the Macs use an FTP client called Fetch, and the Windows machines use an FTP client called CoreFTP Lite (CoreFTP LE).
If you are using a Macintosh computer that is running Fetch, you can follow the Fetch instructions. If you are using a Windows computer that is running CoreFTP, you can follow the CoreFTP instructions.
There are many other free FTP clients that can be used to connect to webhawks.org. Regardless of the FTP client you choose to use, here are the settings that you will need to connect.
Server/Host/Hostname: webhawks.org
User/Username/Login/ID: [your course number followed by your Cabrillo student ID number — see below]
If you do not know your Webhawks user name for the class, here is how to determine your user name:
Your Webhawks user name is made up of your course number and your student ID number. First it starts with the Cabrillo course number, all capitals, with a hyphen (for example, “DM-60”, or “DM-61”). Next it contains your student ID number. Next it contains your student ID number. Your Webhawks user name contains no spaces, and is case sensitive (all letters must be uppercase). For example, the Webhawks user name for a student in the DM60 class who has a student ID number of 1234567 would be “DM-601234567” (without the quotes).
Password: [your Cabrillo student ID number]
Your Webhawks password is initially set to be your student ID number.
Protocol: SFTP or SSH or Port 22
Webhawks.org uses a secure protocol. Some FTP clients call this SFTP (for secure FTP); others call this SSH (for secure shell).
Most FTP clients will have you select the protocol from a drop-down menu or a checkbox. Look for a setting that says something like "SFTP" or "SSH." If, instead, you are asked to provide a port number, enter port 22.
